REMEMBERING MEANS [RE]ACTING!

8 May 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the German prisoner of war camp Stalag VIII A Görlitz and its numerous sub-camps. Around 8 May, Meetingpoint Memory Messsiaen – Verein für Erinnerung, Bildung, Kultur e.V. is organising a series of events with its partners in Görlitz and Zgorzelec to commemorate the victims of the camp and the Second World War.

This year we also like to invite you to participate in a virtual commemoration. We would love to get in touch with the families and descendants of the victims of the cruel crimes of the National Socialists and to honour the soldiers who were taken as German prisoners of war, who suffered and lost their lives in these camps. We also invite all interested individuals and organisations as well as former project participants and visitors to the memorial to take part in the virtual commemoration.

The 2025 topis of the VIRTUAL REMEMBRANCE is: “REMEMBERING MEANS [RE]ACTING” together for human rights and democratic values

This year’s 80th anniversary of the liberation of Stalag VIII A Görlitz therefore combines the commemoration of the victims with an urgent appeal to all generations: REMEMBERING MEANS [RE]ACTING

Respect for human rights and the defence of democratic values that protect minorities and the guaranteed freedoms that were fought for after the Second World War are one of the most important tasks for the future. We therefore call on you to stand up for these rights and to speak out against right-wing extremist voices and anti-democratic tendencies. Only in this way can we preserve an open and just society – against forgetting and for a future in freedom and democracy.

The virtual commemoration will be published on the online platforms Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky and on the Meetingpoint Memory Messiaen e.V. website. We cordially invite you to be a part of the Virtual Commemoration 2025 with a statement or video contribution!

Participation in the VIRTUAL REMEMBRANCE

    1. We ask you to send either a statement (100-200 characters) with max. 3 photos or a video statement (portrait format) of max. 45 seconds.
    2. Please briefly introduce yourself in the video or text in your native language and express your views on the 2025 annual theme “REMEMBERING MEANS [RE]ACTING” together for human rights and democratic values.
    3. Please copy the following consent to the publication of your video or text into your email to us

    “I, _____, hereby grant Meetingpoint Memory Messiaen e.V. the unrestricted and irrevocable right and permission to publish, distribute, exhibit or otherwise use the photographs, the video that {name of photographer} has taken or may have taken of me.”
