14 Sep 22 VISIT BY THE FAMILY OF A FORMER STALAG VIII A POW
On Wednesday 14th September, 2022, Didier Peyrard and his wife visited us to talk about his father, who was a prisoner of war in Stalag VIII A in 1940/41.
Marcel Peyrard was a French prisoner of war who was captured by the Nazis in 1940 and sent to the POW camp in Görlitz. In 1941, he managed to leave the camp due to illness and the Wehrmacht’s attempt to prevent an epidemic outbreak. After a six-month stay in hospital and his recovery, Marcel Peyrard was released and could return to his family.
Didier Peyrard brought back a distinctly personal item from his father, which has been in Stalag VIII A more than seven decades ago already. Didier Peyrard’s travel suitcase accompanied him during his imprisonment, illness, liberation and beyond. Now, his suitcase will soon be added to our exhibition.
We sincerely thank the Peyrard family for their visit, interesting conversations and such an enriching gift.
