27.07.-10.08.2019 – Flight and Migration – past and present

WORCATION is an international youth exchange with the character of a workcamp. Participants live and work together. The group takes part in different workshops during the day. The workshops revolve around the Second World War and around POWs imprisoned in Stalag VIII A which was established during the Second World War in Görlitz. Today it is a place of memory and education for people from all around the world. It is located in the European Twincity Görlitz-Zgorzelec (located at the German-Polish border).

Participants:

Young adults aged 16-26 from Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy, Ukraine and France.

Language:

Participants should be able to speak and understand English on a communicative level. The main language in the exchange is English.

Workshops:

„In touch with history”
This workshop takes place on the historical grounds of former POW camp Stalag VIII A. In cooperation with a professional archaeologist participants uncover original artefacts which have to be cleaned and registered afterwards. During the workshop participants also learn how to get to the bottom of historical issues and to interpret their findings with the help of other sourcessuch as photos, documents and statements.

„Art as a means of survival“
Together with a workshop leader, the participants will deal in an artistic way with the project´s topic for this year “Flight and Migration”. They will be divided into two groups – a music and a theatre group. First, they are going to define the terms of art and performance. Next step is to try to answer the question of how and when art becomes “means of survival”. The workshop will encourage the participants to approach fates of prisoners of war, displaced persons and refugees through art mediums. This way they have the opportunity to recognize and strengthen their own identity, develop new ideas, create an artistic performance in cooperation with an international team.

Group life, free time, accommodation and food:

The group will be accommodated in a house (Jugendherberge Peregrinus) in the old town in multilateral rooms. There will be time to learn languages, get to know each other and have fun.

Together the group will have to organize itself and cook, shop and clean and define the evening-programme for themselves.

Fees:

Participants will have to pay a fee of 100,00€ in total. Food lodging and the workshops are covered 100%. Travel costs cannot be refunded.
